Paid Internships For College Students: A Strategy For Finding A Paid Internship
Paid internships for college students are difficult to come by. In this economy there are not too many companies willing to offer paid internships. This is not a reason to get discouraged; all you need to do is find another strategy, which I’m going to offer you.
The key to being successful finding paid internships for college students would be for you to aim low. When I say a low, I mean you want to go for smaller lesser-known organizations, and for the following reasons.
Smaller organizations are understaffed
The whole key to getting a paid internship with a smaller organization is being near the end of your degree. At this point you should possess a lot of knowledge and related skills. Smaller organizations are not going to have personnel of your caliber. These smaller organizations will be more than happy to have your skills at their disposal.
Why your chances are good with smaller organizations
Paid internships for college students at larger organizations are so tough because even though they have the money they are unwilling to spend it on interns. Smaller organizations on the other hand might be. They key is to offer your services for a fraction of the price. Seeing as how so many smaller organizations are underfunded if you offer your services at a fraction of the price they may be willing to take you on for a short period of time.
Selling yourself to the right organizations
In order for you to be successful in a paid internship as a college student at a smaller organization you must first understand why they may not hire you on as a regular. One of the reasons is as I stated above, they simply cannot afford to hire top talent. If you come from a competitive school and are willing to work for little pay, you must make sure you emphasize this when contacting them.
How to find such paid internships for college students
What you want to do is research various small organizations related to your chosen field. After you have researched them collect all of the contact information and start writing them letters or calling them. Be sure to offer your services to them for a fraction of the cost. Don’t look at the money you would get or the lack of money. Your only goal is to gain necessary experience so you can compete for better jobs down the line.
Why you should consider avoiding bigger companies
Paid internships for college students at bigger companies are difficult to come by because you are going to face a lot of competition. Many of them are willing to work for free, and in this case why pay someone. Also at many of the bigger companies you might not actually be gaining any real experience. For the most part you might be doing repetitive tasks such as fetching coffee and running small errands.
Apply the strategy I mentioned above and you should definitely hit upon an opportunity for a paid internship. What’s even better is you will gain real experience and not just be there to run errands.
